Pike Angling .com - Lure Fishing
In the warmer weather there is no better time to get out there and catch those pike on artificial baits. Hopefully our Lure
fishing guide will help you catch a few more of those hard fighting summer pike.
Artificial Baits - Spinners
Plugs come with different angled veins on the front that allow them to be fished anywhere from the surface to 30+ feet deep.
Probably the newest type of artificial bait on the market, soft plastic baits mimic an injured fish and are proving highly effective
on many waters.
Spinners have been around for years and are still great at catching pike of all sizes. Its always worth trying a spinner as
they create a lot of vibration in the water. There are 1000's available from a basic design, like the one pictured,
to more elaborate versions.
Like spinners, spoons have been about for ever and remain highly effective. Great for fishing from the bank, but they are also the
perfect artificial bait for trolling. Its worth carrying a few different colours and patterns as pike will respond only to certain
colours some days.

A relatively new idea fly fishing for pike is starting to take off now. In the summer you can get some ferocious takes using this
method.
Try braid: Braided line has almost zero stretch and allows you to have much better control of the lure.
The right tackle: A spinning rod capable of casting heavy lures and playing pike, or a regular carp/pike rod. A strong reel with
at least 15lb (6.5kg) line. Also strong long-nosed pliers or forceps are essential for removing hooks.
As stated in the Bait fishing section, look for features, pike will be close to weed beds, reeds, bars and fallen trees etc...
Carry lures in a selection of colours, some days pike will only strike certain ones
Hooks quickly lose their edge, so sharpen or replace blunt or damaged ones straight away.
Find the right retrieve rate some days, pike will only hit a slow moving lure
Find the right depth, pike can be found in all layers of the water, so you will need to find where they are, start shallow and slowly
go deeper
Last but not least, make sure you unhook fish and get them back in the water as quickly as possible. Especially in summer pike fight
very hard, hold them in the water until they can swim away on their own
